There are 10 family groups currently being delivered in the Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancs area, including Dads Group and Penguin Group for families of children
with additional needs.  All of the groups welcome parents/carers with children aged 0–5 years old. These are all supported by Big Lottery funding.  We have a dedicated team of Group Support Workers who deliver quality sessions using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidelines, which is used in all nursery and school settings. The groups offer a safe, welcoming environment where confidence and skills can be nurtured. Positive relationships develop between parents and staff and this helps to identify a family’s individual needs. Some of these needs can be met within the group, others may require a referral to our home visiting service or signposting to other more appropriate services.

“Myself and my son have gained friends. It helps us socialise and bond in a safe environment, enjoying activities we might not do at home”

Penguin Group

Home-Start Penguin group is a small friendly group which caters for families with children with additional needs.

We offer support and stimulating play sessions to families who may find it difficult to access generic groups due to their situation and their child’s condition.

Staff and volunteers are on hand to give help and advice in a non-judgemental and sensitive way or just there to listen and understand.

Families who attend Penguins describe the group as invaluable and welcoming and often go on to use other services signposted by the group staff.

“Sense of normality for Jacob, supportive environment to chat to other people without being judged”

Dad’s Group

Dad’s Group meets fortnightly, term time, on Saturday mornings 10am until 12 noon, in the Home-Start Family room at the Chorley office.

It isn’t an exclusive group for Dad’s but it is for male carers of children, including grandfathers, step parents, uncles and foster carers.

There are currently 14 dads who access the group with 25 children.

We have free play time for dads to spend quality time playing with their children in a safe environment, with craft activities available for creative expression and development encouragement.

The activities set up are in place to aid learning and development of the children and their dads. The programme follows the EYFS Statutory Framework, as set by the recommendation of the Government for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years of age.

Singing time, with action rhymes, is an essential part of the group. The group has bacon/ sausage butties/ toast at snack time, which is at the end of the session, so that the children have had their lunch before they go home.

“As a fulltime working Dad, having dedicated time to spend with my kids and Interact with other Dads is invaluable”
